Ghassan Abbasi Ghassan Abbasi was born in the town of Al-Hoson, in Northern Jordan in April of 1967. At a young age he was attracted to the sound and look of the oud. Prior to learning the oud, he played on a broken guitar that had one string only. He could play entire songs on this guitar. On one occasion a guest was visiting his house and heard him playing this guitar. The man turned out to be an oud player, and gave Ghassan his first oud as a gift. He also gave him some basic lessons, and this was the beginning of his oud adventure. From about the age of 18 Ghassan was learning the oud on his own. Early on it was a struggle, and two weeks after he received his oud, Ghassan broke it in frustration. The next day he went to Damascus and bought another oud, and was determined not to give up the challenge of learning to play this wonderful instrument. He continued learning the oud on his own until the year of 1994 when he met the Iraqi Oud Master, Munir Bashir, in Amman, Jordan. |

After the first year and a half with Munir Bashir, the master became ill and left to Europe for medical purposes. For one year, Ghassan studied on his own waiting for the return of his teacher. After it was evident Munir Bashir would not return, he decided to move to Baghdad, where he could meet and study with other masters and players. Some of the artists he met and mixed with were Khaled Mohamed Ali, Salem Abdel Karim, Moataz Mohamed Saleh el-Bayati, Samy Naseem, Raed Khoshaba, and many others. He studied in Baghdad for approximately four months and returned to Jordan thereafter. Upon returning from Iraq, Ghassan decided to have his first professional performance in his hometown of Al-Hoson. After this performance, he played in numerous venues throughout Jordan, such as, the Jerash Annual Festival, the Royal Cultural Center (Amman), and the Arab Club for Culture and the Arts (Amman). Shortly thereafter, he moved to Lebanon for three years where he released his first CD (Oriental Improvisations). After this he moved to the United Arab Emirates where he also performed professionally. Ghassan now resides in the U.S.A. Ghassan is not only an oud player. He also sings, composes, and writes lyrics. He can perform in numerous Arabic dialects perfectly. He is currently working on his first singing album of his own compositions and lyrics.
